pearl<\/b>\u00a0is a hard, glistening object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the\u00a0mantle<\/a>) of a living\u00a0shelled<\/a>mollusk<\/a>\u00a0or another animal, such as fossil\u00a0conulariids<\/a>. Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is composed of\u00a0calcium carbonate<\/a>\u00a0(mainly\u00a0aragonite<\/a>\u00a0or a mixture of aragonite and\u00a0calcite<\/a>)[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in minute crystalline form, which has deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes, known as\u00a0baroque pearls<\/a>, can occur. The finest quality of natural pearls have been highly valued as\u00a0gemstones<\/a>\u00a0and objects of\u00a0beauty<\/a>\u00a0for many centuries. Because of this,\u00a0pearl<\/i>\u00a0has become a\u00a0metaphor<\/a>\u00a0for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.<\/p>\n

The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as\u00a0natural<\/i>\u00a0pearls.\u00a0Cultured<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0farmed<\/i>\u00a0pearls from\u00a0pearl oysters<\/a>\u00a0and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those currently sold.\u00a0Imitation pearls<\/a>\u00a0are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry. Pearls have been harvested and cultivated primarily for use in\u00a0jewelry<\/a>, but in the past were also used to adorn clothing. They have also been crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines and paint formulations.<\/p>\n

Whether wild or cultured, gem-quality pearls are almost always\u00a0nacreous<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0iridescent<\/a>, like the interior of the shell that produces them. However, almost all species of shelled mollusks are capable of producing pearls (technically “calcareous concretions”) of lesser shine or less spherical shape. Although these may also be legitimately referred to as “pearls” by gemological labs and also under U.S.\u00a0Federal Trade Commission<\/a>\u00a0rules,[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and are formed in the same way, most of them have no value except as curiosities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
