Just like the shell of a mollusk, a pearl is composed of\u00a0<a title=\"Calcium carbonate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calcium_carbonate\">calcium carbonate<\/a>\u00a0(mainly\u00a0<a title=\"Aragonite\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aragonite\">aragonite<\/a>\u00a0or a mixture of aragonite and\u00a0<a title=\"Calcite\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calcite\">calcite<\/a>)<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pearl#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0in minute crystalline form, which has deposited in concentric layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but many other shapes, known as\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Baroque pearls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baroque_pearls\">baroque pearls<\/a>, can occur. The finest quality of natural pearls have been highly valued as\u00a0<a title=\"Gemstone\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gemstone\">gemstones<\/a>\u00a0and objects of\u00a0<a title=\"Beauty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beauty\">beauty<\/a>\u00a0for many centuries. Because of this,\u00a0<i>pearl<\/i>\u00a0has become a\u00a0<a title=\"Metaphor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metaphor\">metaphor<\/a>\u00a0for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.<\/p>\n<p>The most valuable pearls occur spontaneously in the wild, but are extremely rare. These wild pearls are referred to as\u00a0<i>natural<\/i>\u00a0pearls.\u00a0<i>Cultured<\/i>\u00a0or\u00a0<i>farmed<\/i>\u00a0pearls from\u00a0<a title=\"Pinctada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinctada\">pearl oysters<\/a>\u00a0and freshwater mussels make up the majority of those currently sold.\u00a0<a title=\"Imitation pearl\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Imitation_pearl\">Imitation pearls<\/a>\u00a0are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry. Pearls have been harvested and cultivated primarily for use in\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jewelry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jewelry\">jewelry<\/a>, but in the past were also used to adorn clothing. They have also been crushed and used in cosmetics, medicines and paint formulations.<\/p>\n<p>Whether wild or cultured, gem-quality pearls are almost always\u00a0<a title=\"Nacre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nacre\">nacreous<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Iridescence\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iridescence\">iridescent<\/a>, like the interior of the shell that produces them. However, almost all species of shelled mollusks are capable of producing pearls (technically &#8220;calcareous concretions&#8221;) of lesser shine or less spherical shape.
